People: Tristen and Karissa
In July I started babysitting my nephew during the week. My sister had to go back to work (she's still putting her husband through school) and it was easier for me to stay home to do my job (Public Relations Consultant) than for her stay to home as a social worker.
So, we made the arrangment.
It was difficult at first to figure out how to get my work done with a baby...but I've figured out how to be very productive during nap time! ;-)
And, little Tristen is such a good baby. I work on the computer almost all day and he doesn't mind sitting on my lap while I work.
Here is how a typical day with Tristen goes....
First, his dad drops him off around six in the morning. He's wide awake.
I bring him to my bedroom and play with him while we talk to Calvin.
When Calvin is almost ready to leave for work Tristen and I go downstairs and make him breakfast (just something quick) to eat on his way to work. (Yeah, I know, most people probably eat breakfast at home but Calvin would rather get a little more sleep than wake up earlier to eat breakfast at home.)
Then Calvin plays with him for a second (he makes sure he makes Tristen laugh at least once before he leaves for work).
After Calvin leaves for work, Tristen and I jump on the computer to check my email.
Then it's time for him to eat. I feed him a bottle, burp him and put him down for his morning nap.
During his morning nap I jump in the shower.
Then, I get out of the shower and get back to work. (I still wear sweats though - because I get to work from home and who knows when Tristen might spit up.)
When Tristen wakes up we play for a little while. (He is so dang cute!)
And then of course we get back to work. A lot of times Tristen will play on a blanket on the floor in my office. He watches me work.
Then I feed him again and put him down for his afternoon nap. I get back to work. (I am so much more productive when he's napping so I do as much as I can.)
When he wakes up from his afternoon nap I carry him on my hip and pick up the house. He's a good helper. ;-)
Then we play again (he really is a happy kid) and wait until his Dad comes to pick him around 4:30/5:00 PM.
After Tristen leaves, I pick up the baby stuff and put it away (I made him his own little room in our loft), finish work projects, and start dinner....
It's very interesting for me to stay home with a baby. But, I can't really say I'm a stay-at-home-mom because I still have a full-time job.
I've been invited to meet up with people during the day now (which is something I was never able to do before unless it was on my lunch break) but I can't go. I have to work. I can't really have play dates, or lunch dates or anything during the day because I have to get my work done.... So I'm still not a typical "stay-at-home-mom", I guess.
I don't mind not going out during the day. And working from home, although difficult, has been pretty cool too (I take conference calls in my pajamas).
I seriously adore Baby Tristen. He is so much fun and I love him more than I've ever loved any other baby - probably because I get to take care of him and watch him grow every day.
So, having Tristen during the day has definitely changed my life. For the better.
(P.S. Calvin says I should probably be more specific in my prayers to have children. As I've been praying for children our 16-year-old nephew Terry moved in and I started watching Baby Tristen during the days. I prayed for children and now we have a teenager and a baby... Nice huh? ;-) The Lord answers prayers in the most interesting ways.... )
